Last seen in our front yard--the scene of the crime
FACTS:
An innocent robin couple found love and built a nest in our holly tree. Much to our elation, about a week later 3 beautiful blue eggs were discovered.
We loved these eggs. We checked them every morning before school and nearly every other time we got in the car. Having done our homework, we knew that they would take a couple of weeks to hatch and that their number one enemy was the common housecat. Thus our war chant was born:
"What do we do? Defend the eggs!
How do we do it? Scat the cat!"
Imagine our grief and surprise when, after having just checked on the eggs that morning, another quick look in the nest just before lunch revealed the following crime scene:
A grey, fuzzy stray cat (did I mention his beady eyes?) was seen perusing the premisis. I, of course, shooed him away, and held some small hope that perhaps this last egg was hatching rather than the leftovers of a feline snack.
As we had already planned a fun, robin-friendly craft for the afternoon,
the kids and I made our robins and then went out to check on the now lone egg in the nest. This is what we found:
Warning--the image may be disturbing.
You'd better watch your back, Mr. Cat. Next time you come around these parts, we'll be waiting.

Oh, that is so sad! They will remember this for a long time. My kids still talk about and are sad about the 3 kittens a stray had at our house last spring and all died.
This is heart breaking. I hope the kids are comforted by the thought of what a wonderful place bird heaven is. :)
I am so sorry that that evil doer got away with such an evil deed. Never did like cats myself.
Those last two pictures are soooo sad! Kate practices that frowny face during a song in nursery for moments just like this. She has such animated expressions, but I'm sad that these frowns were brought on by a scandalous housecat! So sorry.
We share your setiments about cats around these parts- only the cats around here only kill our garden plants!
Oh my goodness- what pitiable expressions. They just look so devasted. Love the little robin craft and this was a very cute post. I am not cat lover myself and now I know why! :)
SO sad!!! Poor kids. They are so cute. On a different note...I saw an add for that show Wipeout (I think that's the one) and it reminded me of how Jonah was asking how old he had to be to be on that show and if I had ever seen it since I live in California. I love your fam!
